"JR1" (type35bugatti)
05/18/2016 at 11:08 • Filed to: Wwybw, what would you buy when | 3 | 100 |
Rules: The car/truck had to be sold brand new in 1986.
I think I would take a 86 Mercedes 560SEC. Sure I could have the wide body but the normal 560 just looks so much more graceful and timeless. The Mercedes is something you could get in and take a long drive and enjoy every second of it.

Best of the 4-eyes, in my opinion. HO 302 with the new multiport injection. I’d have mine just like this but with the gray cloth with red piping. And definitely a luggage rack and not the wing on the rear.

F-150. Standard cab, short box, with glorious ‘80's wheels*, lifted, 4x4, with a 351 and a stick. These used to be my second least favorite F-150 but they have grown on me substantially and would probably be in my top five now. There’s just something so tough looking about them.
*Not glorious ‘80's wheels pictured.

Dammit Jarod, you picked a weird year again!
BMW introduced the E32 7-Series in ‘86 but the V12 wasn’t ready until ‘87. And it’s the 80s, GLUTTONY, who the hell wants a 6 cylinder BMW. Jaguar doesn’t start production on the XJ40 until ‘87. And Cadillac is still deep in the throws of malaise, so I’m not buying a Fleetwood. And as much as I would love a W126 560SEL, I’m trying to go with what I would have actually bought.
So I’m gonna say a 1986 Jaguar XJS V-12. At least it’s got style...

Just one? These were the golden years of cars (outside of the US that is). I’ll take:
Alfa Romeo GTV6
Audi Quattro
Austin Mini
BMW M3 (E30)
BMW M635i CSi
Citroën 2CV Charleston
Citroën BX Sport
Citroën CX 25 Prestige Turbo
Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
Honda Aerodeck (because I can )
Honda CRX (the faster one)
Jaguar XJS 3.6 (because reliability)
Lada Niva
Lancia Delta HF Turbo
Lancia Thema 20. i.e. Turbo (no 8.32 available yet in 1986)
Peugeot 205 GTi
Peugeot 505 Turbo injection
Renault Alpine V6 Turbo
Saab 900 Turbo 16S
And that’s just part of my pick. I left the supercars out, as that’ll be too easy. I already own one of the above by the way (205 GTi).

But the non-rational side of me would go with something like the 1st gen Nissan Leopard coupe.

Or an RS Cosworth

or a 288GTO
Or a 930 Turbo.... Or... Or... Damn, that’s a good year. I think I’d probably do the Sierra RS Cosworth.

Coincidentally, that was the year I graduated high school. Therefore, as a broke-ass 18 year old kid with dreams and aspirations of owning a cool car back then, it would have to have been a 328GTS. In Rosso Red. Because Magnum.

Last of the Mk2's. I guess I’m a creature of comfort and familiarity but knowing how to make one of these last (and uncorking it a bit ;)) and having a solid GT car for DECADES is a hard thing to pass up. I’d bet that dealerships would be willing to deal as they were waiting for the delayed mk3's to show up. Value isn’t a sexy pic but here you go, the best car to buy in 1986.
